gabfmedia_02GREAT BEERS, GREAT HONORS

In its 30th year, the 2016 Great American Beer Festival competition awarded 286 medals to some of the best commercial breweries in the United States, plus three GABF Pro-Am medals to teams of amateur homebrewers paired with professionals.

Silver
Medal, Experimental Beer

In this second rendition of Wineification, the Rues and Parkers continue to vanquish the boundaries between wine and beer. Again they have combined their brains and brawn on a blend of juicy
Rodney’s Vineyard Petite Sirah grapes with The Bruery’s imperial stout, then aging this wine/beer hybrid in French Oak barrels. The flavor profile is remarkable. Notes of black cherry, vanilla, cinnamon, oak, aged balsamic, port wine and a sherry-like oxidation from the barrels. This beer is like nothing that you have ever tried before…besides, perhaps,

The Bruery (Placentia, CA) Mischief

Gold Medal, American-Belgo-Style Ale

Mischief is a hoppy Belgian-style golden ale. This wickedly good golden ale is fiendishly dry-hopped with American hops to add a layer of complexity and mystery to its fruity, dry Belgian-style character. Citrus and resin diabolically combine with ripe melon, pear and slight peppery spice in a precariously effervescent mixture. Enjoy it, but you’ll want to keep an eye out. Gold Medal – 2016 Great American Beer Festival, American-Belgo-Style Ale.

Almanac Beer Co (San Francisco, CA) White Label

Silver Medal, Mixed-Culture Brett Beer

This beer pairs two “blancs”: California-grown Muscat Blanc grapes and German Hallertau Blanc hops. Blended together in wine barrels and large oak foudres, White Label emerges from the casks as a unique hybrid of beer and wine. The combination of white grapes and tropical-aroma hops creates a luscious nose of ripe apricot, lychee and lemongrass. Finished with a touch of coriander, this complex sipper is a perfect pairing for dishes like mussels steamed in coconut curry, fresh pad thai, and macadamia crusted halibut.

Mother Earth Brew Co. (Vista, CA) ESB

Bronze Medal, Extra Special Bitter

An American spin on a classic English style. A crystal clear copper color with hints of caramel and biscuit dominating the nose and a moderate aroma of American hops. Easy drinking but maintains a nice mouth-feel. The flavor begins with hints of fresh baked bread and finishes with hints of caramel and subtle roast from chocolate malt with just the right bitterness on the end. This is a nice malty amber ale for all intents and purposes.

Allagash Brewing (Portland, ME) Tripel

Gold Medal, Belgian-style Tripel

This strong golden ale carries herbal notes and passion fruit in the aroma. Suggestions of honey and biscuit are found in the beer’s complex, varied palate. Brewed with our 2-row barley blend, hopped with Nugget and Hallertau, then fermented on our house yeast, Tripel lingers on the palate for a complex, dry finish.
